Canyon High

Printing Press, Rolling Mill, Forming Block and Stakes, Opaque Projector ($3,750)

Teachers: Leslie Lewis and Sharon Meppen

  Provided equipment that enriched the instruction of art students and for which funding was not available.

 

Canyon Middle

Mathematics, Technology and Graphing Calculators ($4,200)        

Teachers:  Joan Stevens, Mark Sestak, Ana L. Hixon, et al.

  Provided classroom sets of TI 83+ calculators that are portable and more affordable than desktop computers.

 

Comal Elementary

Bobcat Den:  Ensuring Student Success  ($4,200)

Teachers:  Lauri Schroeder, Sayde Dunlap, Fran Wiggins, Judy Fraunhofer, Vicki Ward, and Laura Cannon

  Similar to a Content Mastery Lab, the "Bobcat Den" is a place where any child can go to receive (or give) extra assistance.  Whether difficulties are academic or emotional, "The Den" helps counteract the issues, therefore improving student achievement.

 

Comal Elementary

Orbital Lab ($820)                             

Teacher:  Mary Kay Covington

  Orbital Laboratory, Payload 2, is a classroom based, Internet generated experiment which helps students learn how plants grow aboard the International Space Station. Students conducted valuable scientific research while at the same time helping scientists understand the optimal growing conditions of the plants aboard the International Space Station.

 

Frazier Elementary

The Multimedia Classroom ($1,000)

Teacher:  Janalyn Moos

  The multimedia classroom brought all available technology into the hands of the students.  Students used PowerPoint for a presentation about their family, Word to publish articles for a classroom newsletter, and a digital camera to document activities.

 

Goodwin Primary

Literacy Through Science: Home School Exploration ($646)

Teacher:  Lynn Hefner

  This project continued the homework program and provided emergent readers with a science base (non-fiction as opposed to fiction) which not only gave children early experiences in basic scientific knowledge but also encouraged the reading and writing process.

Architecture in the Classroom ($625)          

Teachers:  Carolyn Abshier & Lisa Trammell

  Sixth-grade math students, under the guidance and direction of two classroom teachers and an architect, planned, designed, and built a 3-D model of a building.

 

Smithson Valley High

Discovering the Fine Art of Printmaking ($4,200)

Teachers:  Claudette Cozzi, Diane Parker, Shirley Bailey, and Stephen Moncus

  This was a multimedia, all inclusive, inner disciplinary and cross-culturally saturated fine arts unit on printmaking.

 

Smithson Valley High

Inclusion of Algebra I: 2000 and Beyond ($4,200)

Teachers:  Linda Meyer, Michael Costello, Ellen Lloyd, and Carolyn Millsap

  This grant allowed for the purchase of classroom sets of TI 83+ calculators for all Algebra I teachers and their students.

 

Spring Branch Middle

ACE-IT ($4,200)                                

Teachers:  Cindy Gregory, Faylynn McMahon, Ann Alexander, et al.

  This project was a series of video presentations via Channel 1 discussing different test taking strategies related to math, reading, writing, social studies, science and test anxiety.  The media technology class, using students, teachers, and parents to present the information in an entertaining manner, produced videos. 

 

Fall Semester, 2002

 

Bill Brown Elementary

Project Publish ($4,500)

Teachers:  Sandra Kilpper, Martha Davis, Debbie Temple, Jennifer Dawley, and Shirley Gerdes

  Project Publish used technology to improve student writing, revising, editing, and publishing skills.

Canyon High School

Teaching Algebra Through Technology ($4,000)

Teachers:  Heather Sanders, Gail Engler, Joanna Henry, Michelle Koehl, and Claudelle Sigle

  This grant allowed for the purchase of additional TI 83+ graphing calculators so that every math student had access to a calculator.

 

Canyon Middle School

Transitioning from Traditional to Integrated and Advanced Computer Instruction ($4,000)

Teachers:  Sal Cadena, Sandra Shelton, James Orth, Ron Rychel, Linda Dreibrodt, Joan Stevens, and Frances Walker

            This grant ensured that all students received computer instruction and it allowed for expansion of the technology program to include advanced classes similar to those being taught at other district middle schools. 

 

Canyon Middle School

Multi-sensory Application of Geographical and Map Skills Instruction for Student Success on Grade Level and EXIT Level TAAS/TAKS exams ($4,500)

Teachers:  Linda Dreibrodt, Laurel Schumacher, Shanna Kellner, et al.

  Provided wall maps in each regular education social studies classroom.

 

Comal Elementary School

SureSight Vision Screening Study ($4,000)

Teachers:  Sharon Wright, RN, Patrice Chauret, RN, Sylvia Frank, RN, et al.

  School nurses can now conduct a study of vision screening using the SureSight Vision Screener.  The technology allows nurses to detect a much greater range of vision problems, including many that have gone undetected by the traditional eye chart method.

  Smithson Valley High School

Adventure Outdoors/ROTC Climbing/Rappelling Tower ($4,500)

Teachers:  Paul Cunningham and John Sondergaard

  Provided for the construction of a rappelling/climbing tower.

 

Smithson Valley High School

Foreign Language Multimedia Learning Laboratory ($4,500)

Teachers:  Pam Finley, Juan Garcia-Maria, Donna Hickl, Fani Schmidt, Gene Stewart, and Judy Weill  

This grant initiated a multimedia-learning laboratory.  The lab provides the instructor time to work on individual student needs while the remainder of the class actively engages in lessons.
